FAQ

What steps are required to become a volunteer?

All volunteer applicants need to:
1. Attend an orientation and training (8 hours)
2. Complete an application and background check.
3. Submit two names and addresses for references. The volunteer department must receive both references before the applicant can start volunteering.
4. Obtain a TB test

5. Obtain permission from their physician to participate in volunteer activities

How long does the process take?

The length of the application process depends on a number of factors: the applicant’s schedule, how quickly references are returned, and how quickly the applicant's TB test results are received. Missed training sessions must be made up at a subsequent training. The volunteer department works very hard to return calls and process paperwork quickly to avoid delays in the process.

Who can volunteer?

We have opportunities for nearly everyone! A few restrictions do apply. New England Hospice volunteer candidates must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer in our in-home and facilities programs. Volunteers must wait at least one year after the death of a loved one before beginning to volunteer with New England Hospice.

I don’t have any experience working in healthcare. Can I still volunteer?

Absolutely! We will provide you with the training that you need to feel comfortable and confident in your volunteer role.

I work professionally in healthcare. Do I still need to attend all of the training?

The roles and perspectives of volunteers and nurses are very different, so we require all of our volunteers who will be working with patients to attend the entire volunteer training. You may find that you are familiar with some portions of the information covered in training, but much of it will be new.
